It had already suffered bomb damage during the night 10/11 May 1941, the heaviest night’s raiding on London in the war.

As a result, very doom laden forecasts were made in 1938 that 1,800,000 civilians would be killed or wounded in Britain during the opening six months of any future war. As events were later to prove, these estimates were far too pessimistic and the final total of deaths resulting from enemy air attacks was only a tiny fraction of those originally predicted. The threat of bombing became real once France had fallen in June 1940 as this gave the opportunity for the Luftwaffe to use captured French and Belgian airfields, thus bringing London and most other British cities within range.
